Requirements

  • All learning material for this unit is provided via our online learning portal and all equipment is provided for the practical assessments.
  • A learner undertaking this course will require a specific skill level in Language, Literacy and Numeracy.

    The course has been assessed as requiring the following Australian Core Skills Framework levels:

    • Learning – Level 2
    • Reading – Level 2
    • Writing – Level 2
    • Oral Communication – Level 1
    • Numeracy – Level 1

This advanced course aims to enhance proficiency in managing critically ill patients and cardiac arrest scenarios. It is designed for healthcare practitioners who are required to utilise these specialised skills in their clinical practice or to instruct others in their application on a regular basis.
The course is designed for health care professionals who are expected to apply these life-support skills in their clinical duties or required to teach them on a regular basis.
Participants include doctors, paramedics and nurses working in critical care areas, and resuscitation/medical emergency teams.
Medical students, student paramedics, student nurses and other healthcare providers not mentioned above, are be encouraged to complete the ALS1/Immediate Life Support (ALS1/ILS) course.
Those with a particular interest in resuscitation should subsequently consider attending an ALS2/ILS course, where deemed appropriate.
Given the course’s rigorous nature, it is advisable for participants to undertake the ALS online component approximately one to two months in advance of the practical session.
Proficiency and aptitude in CPR serve as essential prerequisites for course enrolment. While the program incorporates advanced resuscitation techniques, it also seeks to cultivate leadership abilities and teamwork skills necessary for effectively managing critical scenarios.

The Advanced Life Support (ALS) course imparts the requisite knowledge and skills for:
• Utilising a structured ABCDE approach, the identification, evaluation, and intervention for deteriorating patients aims to avert cardiac arrest through systematic assessment and management.
• Treatment of cardiac and/or respiratory arrest, including manual defibrillation
• Management of life-threatening arrhythmias
• Preparation and planning for post-resuscitation care
• Provision of specialised care for individuals experiencing acute clinical decline or cardiopulmonary arrest in particular medical scenarios, encompassing asthmatic episodes, anaphylactic  reactions, and gestational complications
• Leadership of a team, functioning as a team member, and utilisation of structured communication skills including effective handover
• Consideration of end-of-life decision-making

Eligibility

• Registered medical practitioners with minimum PGY 2
• Nurses working in critical care areas such as intensive care, coronary care, emergency departments, peri
anaesthesia & recovery, MET teams, and cardiac arrest teams
• Intensive Care or Critical Care paramedics

Prerequisites

Competency in basic life support
HLTAID010 – Provide basic emergency life support

ALS course structure

• An online learning program and assessments
• Practical assessment: scenario-based with a EMSET or Suitable workplace facilitator, either face-face or via Zoom

Practical assessment

Your practical assessment will be conducted by an EMSET Assessor. In some circumstances EMSET may appoint an external assessor. This process can only be organised and approved by the EMSET Director. It is your responsibility to organise the required equipment and venue for the practical assessment.

Equipment required

• Adult Manikin: for simulation of CPR, defibrillation and airway insertion
• Defibrillator which can be used in manual mode
• Defibrillator pads (adult)
• Airways: oropharyngeal, nasopharyngeal, LMA (size 3 fits most manikins)
• Yankeur sucker and Y Suction catheter
• Magills forceps (for medical staff assessments only)
• Adult Hudson O, mask
• Bag valve mask
• IVC’s
• 10 and 20ml syringes

If available:

• Ampoules of Adrenaline, Amiodarone, 5% dextrose, n/saline (use out of date or simulated meds)
• Stethoscope, BP cuff
• IV Fluids: e.g.: n/saline
• Sats probe
• End tidal CO, monitoring device

For assessments via Zoom

• Computer/laptop/smart phone/ tablet with working camera and Zoom (https://zoom.us/) which has been tested and is in working order.

For assessments via Upload

Must have a digital camera or phone to record with the ability to upload a Video to the LMS Portal

How do I complete the ALS Online Course?

• Register via the EMSET website
• Complete online learning (access via the EMSET Portal)
• Organise required equipment for practical assessment
• Submit an enquiry to arrange practical assessment (enquiries@emset.com.au )
• Arrange practical assessment with an EMSET assessor or nominated workplace assessor
• Complete practical assessment
• Certificate issued by the LMS automatically and is in your portal
